The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has rejected Alabama’s proposal to take over coal ash regulation. The agency said Thursday that Alabama’s proposal was “significantly less protective of people and waterways" than required by federal regulations. Coal ash is what remains when coal is …
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has again authorized Juneteenth as a state holiday this year. Ivey’s office said Monday that June 19 will be a state workers' holiday coinciding with the federal holiday. Juneteenth has been a federal holiday since 2021. It commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. on…

Workers at two Mercedes-Benz factories near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, have voted overwhelmingly against joining the United Auto Workers. The union lost by a vote of 2,642 to 2,045 in results released Friday by the National Labor Relations Board. The loss dealt a setback to the union’s drive to or…
We’ve all heard stories from those who say their parents messed up their lives. While some stories are horrific, others are typical – albeit distressing – reflections of dysfunctional families.
Alabama has scheduled a second execution to be carried out with nitrogen gas. Gov. Kay Ivey set a Sept. 26 execution date for Alan Eugene Miller. Miller was convicted of killing three men during a 1999 workplace shooting. The attorney general's office says the execution will be carried out b…
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday signed legislation that would put response deadlines in the state’s weak open records law. Alabama’s public records law says any citizen has the right to inspect and take copies of public writings, except for those exempted by law. However, until the new law, it did not require a state entity to respond to a request. The new law sets deadlines to “provide a substantive response” saying the request is being fulfilled or denied. The new law takes effect Oct. 1
Alabama lawmakers on Thursday gave final approval to legislation establishing a new high school focused on preparing students for careers in healthcare, science and technology. The proposed Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences would be located in Demopolis. The proposal is aimed at trying to address a shortage of healthcare workers in the state. The Alabama Senate voted 28-3 for the bill that now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature. Ivey had promoted the idea in her State of the State address at the start of the legislative session.
Can you imagine how deeply our heavenly Father grieves when He sees His children mistreating each other? If I had as many children as God does, I wouldn’t last a day. Correction: I wouldn’t last five seconds.
Alabama lawmakers gave final approval to legislation to ensure President Joe Biden will appear on the state’s November ballot. The House of Representatives voted 93-0 for the legislation. Gov. Kay Ivey signed the measure into law. Alabama has one of the earliest candidate certification deadlines in the country, which has caused difficulties for whichever political party has the later convention date that year. The legislation mirrors changes made four years ago to allow then-President Donald Trump to appear on the ballot.
The construction of a new Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery and related projects such as a parking deck and green space will cost about $400 million. A 20-member panel of legislative leaders and their appointees were given an update on the project Wednesday. The director of the Legislative Se…

When you think of holidays, you may think “Oh goody, I’m going to have a day off from work or school.” April 18 is a national holiday, but not one of those kinds.
“I’m here today to apologize for the personal mistakes I’ve made and the embarrassment I’ve caused my family and community … I’m announcing my resignation from Congress …”
Last weekend was a colorful one for Jean and me. We spent two nights in a purple mansion in Laurel, Mississippi, and rode in a pink stretch limo as we toured the “Home Town” of HGTV’s Ben and Erin Napier.

You have a busy day ahead of you. Your schedule is filled with all kinds of things you had planned.
Standing there before God and man, I grasped my soon-to-be-husband’s hands tightly. “I need to confess something, Bert. I haven’t quite mastered 1 Corinthians 13:5 yet. So, maybe I’d be more honest if I said my vows this way: ‘I, Sheryl, take you, Bert, to be my husband if you don’t insult m…
The words on the page are vivid. So excruciatingly vivid that you wish the plot would read differently. Emotions catch in your throat, and suddenly, you’re there – part of the story.
